In the 3rd Century BC. Paris was founded by the Celtics. I’m sure many people know that. To those that do not, well now you do. If you have been to this amazing city, you will recall the amazing culture, the architecture and the way of life not found anywhere else. With buildings so impressive, you shake your head with disbelief. To think that these were built by hand, by masons, so Masterful in their craft, you would be hard pressed to find such skilled labour within the confines of jobshop.ca. From the Arc de Triomphe, to the Louvre and on to the Notre-Dame Cathedral. These three marvels alone stand as not only a symbol of the nation’s pride but accomplishments of what man can achieve. There is so much more to add, but I will let you go on your own treasure hunt. The sad thing is, up until Friday of last week, you could tap those 5 little letters- “Paris” on your google finder, and the boys at Wikipedia had this in top spot. That was until a few days ago, a nest of hornets dove in and ruined the lives of not only those who were taken from us, but everyone. This affects us all and should not be forgotten. Now I have been to Paris. In 1980 my brother and I tried in vain to run across to the arc, alas, the ubiquitous number of Citroens held us back. This was a good thing, as I don’t think I would be here to write this today.
Last night the good people that cultivated the Calgary European Film Fest, hosted the closing Gala, at the Brewsters Brewing Company & Restaurant
There, I had the distinct pleasure to be invited into one of Calgary’s best known little secret. This is where I found the heart of the European people. Their culture and warmth is spread to not just each other, but to everybody. The thoughts I had of intruding into these people with a 70mm lens was not evoked with a look of mistrust, but a warm and welcoming smile and genuine interest in being cemented into the world map by way of this article.
The evening started off with welcome in every European language they could muster followed by a moment of pause, Thank you to Maria Serban, for allowing us to reflect.
To the people of Paris, I offer my sincerest and most heartfelt condolences. My 13 year old self standing on the precipice of the Eiffel tower, never could have imagined that the city of love, would end up on the world stage under the influence of what I would best describe them as filth. However, to write about these poorly educated misdirected masses is exactly what they want. So I will not.
I would like to thank the following:
** I apologize to Mariet, I wrote that her origin was Romanian, when in fact Mariet is in fact from Bulgaria. **
Adrian and Ana Glavan
The Globe Cinema
If I missed your name, then drop me a line and I will gladly add it to the list.
Thank you for your hard work and allowing us into your world.
